With his teammates either tucked into their beds dreaming of golf and endless buffet tables, leading marathon newbies around a flooded Lost Lagoon, or off tackling ridiculous distances in dance slippers that look like gorilla feet, Brian Wynhoven found himself in the increasingly more frequent position of being the lone representative of the Broadway Run Club toeing the line at Sunday’s Icebreaker 8k down along the Steveston shoreline. The conditions were ideal for the opening race in the Lower Mainland Road Race Series, a series in which Brian placed second last year in his new age group category.
The race was won by Shane Carlos in 25:07. Brian finished 14th in a respectable 29:29, sandwiched between fast girls, Meaghan McCollum and Rachel Ruus. For his efforts, Brian scooped another Kajaks silver medal for his collection, finishing behind PRR’s rising Master’s middle-distance track phenom, Russell Busche, in the Men’s 40-44 category. Soft-spoken VFAC trash-talker and hair-product pitchman, Jo Astoria, was third.
Next event on the dance card is the BMO St. Paddy’s Day 5k on Saturday, March 13, 2010 in Stanley Park. Race director Steve Mattina puts on a great post-race feast and piss-up so expect Brian to show up with a few friends in March.
